The Early Interplanetary Age

1973 AD to 2048 AD


1973 AD

  • The United States LEO station of SkyLab is launched into orbit, and will serve as the core component of an eventual station that will be the hub of official American governmental activity in space.  While much smaller than the Orion at this point, SkyLab still serves as a support, maintenance, and research facility for the vessel and all planned future vessels of that particular class.
  • To the complete surprise and shock to the rest of the world, the Soviet Union launches the Yuri Gagarin, an Orion-type spacecraft.  Unlike its American counterpart, this Gagarin-class vessel is smaller and more streamlined, and it is immediately sent directly to Venus.  Accompanying it are several smaller launches, of more standard designs and propulsion, which will carry supplies and materials necessary for the infrastructure of a Venusian outpost.  This "klaster zapusk", or cluster launch, is a style that will dominate Soviet space launches for the next several years.  It allows for the swift placement of infrastructure materials, and more redundancy and reliability than is present for single vehicle launches.
  • A twin to SkyLab is launched and placed in orbit of the Moon by the United States.  Like the Salyut station, this facility (named Freedom) will serve as a transportational hub for American and allies CisLunar traffic.
  • The Ares I mission is launched and later arrives in orbit of Mars.  This manned mission utilizes the second American Orion-class vessel, the USS Stanislaw Ulam, which was constructed specifically for this task.  This is the first long term Human mission to the planet.  During the course of the mission several orbiters and landers are launched, effectively placing the planet under wide ranging surveillance.  Probes are also sent to the two Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos.  It is during this phase of the mission that the first indications of advanced technological past intelligence are discovered in the Mars system.  Plant and animal life is also observed, and based on these observations it is determined that life on Mars is similar enough to the Earth to argue a common origin.  No Human landing is made during this mission, with all surface activities being teleo-operated.

1973 AD

  • The Ares II mission is launched via the USS Orion.  Specifically outfitted for surface operations, a ten man team establishes Camp Lowell in the rolling plains of Cimmeria.  While not permanently posted, they will leave behind long term facilities to greet future missions.  The Ares II mission is the first to determine the genetic make up of Martian life forms, and finds them traceable to both extant and extinct Earth forms.  Long range observations are also made of native Martians, though no attempt to contact them is yet made. Camp Lowell supports both ground and aerial excursion forces, with exploratory treks reaching up to one hundred kilometers away.
  • The Venusian Soviets discover the first artifacts which date back to both the Eemian and the Sivata civilizations.  Coupled with what has been discovered on the Moon already, a slow picture of a paradoxically old Human presence off of the Earth is beginning to emerge.  However, these Venusian discoveries remain classified to top level Soviet governmental and scientific individuals.
  • The Soviets establish the foundational components of the Mir station in High Earth Orbit.  The ultimate design of this station is a habitation wheel, and it will swiftly grow to become the largest structure in Earth orbit.  It is a strictly Soviet installation, with very little international exposure or access.

1975 AD

  • After a series of publications are released by a group of European scientists, the topic of asteroid resources takes center stage, especially in light of the materials currently needed to maintain offworld ventures.  Both the United States and the Soviets declare their intentions to begin a program of asteroid investigation, exploration, and exploitation, specifically for the goal of harvesting raw materials needed for terrestrial and offworld concerns.  However, Europe  begins to take center stage in this, providing much of the needed theoretical work and astronomical research.
  • The beginning of the so-called Computer Revolution.  To date, most computer systems have been large, comparatively slow, and quite ungainly.  However, recent advances spurred on by both the movement offworld and international rivalries has fed an unprecedented amount of money and resources into the development of computer technology.  The invention of the microchip during this year by Dr. Andrew Morrison allows for the explosion of computer innovation, which will have resounding effects throughout world civilization.
  • The Soviets on Venus discover the first signs of the prehistoric Celaë, the intelligent Dinosaurian species that fled the Earth and eventually became extinct on Venus.  It will be many years before the true nature of the Celaë are divined, but there is undeniable truth that these creatures were non-Human -- the first ever encountered by modern Humans.
1976 AD:  The Ares III mission to Mars via the Stanislaw Ulam expands on Lowell Camp, and establishes the first permanent manned base, Burroughs, on the Solis Plains.  A rotating population of  twenty-five people will initially inhabit the outpost, but this will grow over the years as  the facilities are expanded and a series of constant Earth-Mars flights are established.  Among the most exciting discoveries of the Ares II mission include the investigation of extensive Martian ruins dating back hundreds of thousands of years, and the first direct contact with native Martians, now known to be descendents of Homo erectus.  Ares III is widely accepted as the mission which opened the door for wider ranging Martian colonization.

1977 AD

  • The foundational components of the future Waypoint Station are placed in High Earth Orbit by the United States and her allies.  Intended as an international space station, it is to act as the jumping off point for manned missions to the Moon and Mars.  Its long term design is that of a habitation wheel, and will soon outsize the Mir space station.  Indeed, the Soviets will eventually have a territorial section on the station as well.
  • The first civilian members of the Venusian Soviet colony arrive.  These are the family members of the scientists and political officers, as well as non-governmental workers.  It is the first step towards a scientific thawing of the nation, and its relation with other countries.
1978 AD:  Advanced telescopic observations from sites on the Moon begin to reveal the presence of extrasolar planetary systems.  While the first discoveries are largely accidental, this opens up an entirely new astronomical field, pushed onward by the knowledge that there have been previous civilizations in the Sol System, some of which may well have been extrasolar in origin.
1979 AD:  The first civilians arrive on Mars.  Family members, support staff, and scientists of varying degrees, these people are considered true citizens of Mars, with little or no intention of returning permanently to the Earth.  For the first time US citizens are allowed to petition for residency in the growing Martian community, as well as to establish other scattered settlements around the immediate region.

1981 AD:  In a mission that has been planned for years, a joint American-Soviet-European crew undertakes the first manned mission to an asteroid, 22 Kalliope.  With asteroids themselves still a new field of research, the mission is intended to be both scientific in nature and to serve as a feasibility study for resource allocation and exploitation.  The vessel used, named the James Hutton, is an Orion type vessel constructed by the Soviets but the first of an international fleet.  The expedition will last for several months.  Notable among the crew is the American geologist Eugene Shoemaker.  While the mission will go on to prove that asteroid resource harvesting would be feasible indeed, it is also notable for the remarkable discovery of the infamous Kalliope Woman, an ancient Human astronaut dating from the final days of the technologically proficient Lost Civilization.  Her corpse would provide a wealth of information about Human history and genetics.  The successful conclusion of the mission sees the birth of the Exploration Society, an organization devoted to scientific research and understanding.

1982 AD:  The first economically feasible and sustainable fusion reactor is brought online in Japan.  This heralds the beginning of the Fusion Revolution.  While it will take many years to achieve, the replacement of the older nuclear facilities by fusion plants is now inevitable.  The technology will swiftly spread throughout the world and become a touchstone technology for space travel.  It also marks the rise of Japan as a major world power, economically and politcially.

1983 AD

  • A small asteroid only 80 meters in diameter is captured and returned to Earth orbit by the Prosperity's Dawn, the first Orion vessel to be commissioned and operated by a private corporation, Gundersen Manufacturing Industries.  It is a metal-rich asteroid and proves that the technology and methods needed for asteroid exploitation are feasible and economically viable.  Many see this as an economic revolution, and that Gundersen is at the forefront of the wave.
  • Mars is officially declared a Human outpost with the birth of the first Human on its soil.  Territorial claims by various Earth nations and groups are considered, but by and large America and her allies are the only nations interested in creating new communities here.  In effect, Mars has become an extension of the West, just as Venus is widely considered to be an extension of the Soviet Bloc.
1985 AD:  Based out of New Jersey, The American Technologies Corporation (AmTech) is founded.  Their primary mission is to exploit asteroid resources for use in the development of Western technological expansion.  While this company is not the only one traveling this path, it is the first to widely use  robotics and advanced unmanned ship designs.  It is also the first - and only - such company to establish a separate headquarters on Mars.  Once in place there, AmTech will become a driving force behind the industrialization of the Martian settlements.

1986 AD

  • Utilizing recent advances in engineering and construction material discoveries, work is begun on SkyTower, an international space elevator.  Designed as a simple cable, it is constructed at LEO with the cable being simultaneously extended upward and downward.  The material used is an imported asteroid.  The base will be an oceanic platform currently under construction in the Pacific Ocean.  Named Marineris, this platform will eventually be a self-sustaining population center, catering to international sea vessels, as well as possessing subsurface levels to facilitate deep sea exploration.  The upper level of SkyTower will be a large, modified asteroid, serving as the Tower's counter-weight as well as a space station.  To be named SkyGate, the asteroid for this portion is already en route to the Earth under contract to Gundersen.  The entire facility is under an international partnership, and will be administered by the CisLunar Transit Authority, under the auspices the United Nations.
  • China, with some aid from the Soviet Union, establishes a colonial base on the Moon.  While the other extant outposts concentrate on mining and astronomical research, the Chinese base is almost exclusively centered around genetic research.  A portion of their resources, largely overseen and manned by the Soviets, are centered on resource allocation, but only as far as needed to maintain the base itself and to provide ongoing payment to the Soviets for their aid.
1987 AD:  In central Indiana, coal miners digging deep into a coal seem discover the remains of a prehistoric forest, hundreds of millions of years old.  Among the fossils are the remains of several eurypterid forms, as well as what appears to be tools, worked wood, shaped stone, and even portions of buildings.  The find is sufficiently ambiguous to keep paleontologists guess for some time, but many believe that this is indeed hard evidence of an ancient intelligent species.  The idea of an intelligent eurypterid is embraced by the public at large, a further hint that the universe might be filled with intelligent life.

1988 AD:  The direct measurements of extrasolar planetary atmospheres are made for the first time.  Within the year, several identified planets are suspected to be living worlds.  Indeed, so many such discoveries are made that this becomes known as The Year Of The Other Earths.

1989 AD

  • AmTech, which has become the foremost private industry in asteroid resource allocation, opens up a line of trade between Mars and CisLunar space, in which minerals from the Moon and various asteroids are transported.  The influx of materials helps to jumpstart the beginning of a period of space station construction at the Angry Planet.  Later in the year the trade lines will reach towards Venus as well, although the Soviets are charged higher prices and the trade with them is highly regulated.
  • The Star of Arabia, a small LEO habitat, is completed by the government of Saudi Arabia.  This initiates the beginning of a period of major station construction by governments, corporations, and special interest groups.  These stations are the earliest major components of what will become CisLunar space's so-called Halo, a shell of artificial structures that extend well outward to the LaGrangian points.  The term "halo" will eventually be used by other settled planets, and they will become important components in the growing interplanetary community.

1991 AD:  The AmTech vessel Johannes Dutchmann is sent on a mission to explore a small population of asteroids within the orbit of Mercury.  These Vulcanian asteroids number less than ten thousand, and are believed to possess unique minerals formed by billions of years of intense solar radiation.  The ship has been specifically designed for this type of mission, and carries a crew of seven.  A catastrophic failure while en route to their primary destination disables the vessel, leaving it locked into a course for the asteroid Brost.  The crew is lost to radiation exposure, and the Dutchmann itself eventually lands on Brost and powers down.  It is the most infamous loss of a space vessel of the century.

1992 AD

  • Some of the earliest iterations of artificial intelligence are created.  While not truly independently sapient, these programs will eventually lead to a line of development that will see the appearance of AI's in various every day aspects.
  • Long since relegated to a third world power, especially following the rise of Saudi Arabia in the modern world, Iran and Iraq jointly invade Kuwait and swiftly overwhelm that small nation.  Oil prices around the globe sky rocket, throwing economic ripples in all aspects of the world economy.  The West demands the abandonment of Kuwait, and a major international Naval task force lead by the United States moves into the Persian Gulf.  This is the beginning of the long running Middle East Crisis.


1993 AD:  The first manned mission to Mercury is conducted, and what is more, it is performed by an entirely private organization.  Consisting of an international team, the Icarus Unlimited Corporation arrives at Mercury and will touch down several times at several different sites.  Among these is the North Polar Region, where a test module is left behind.  Dubbed Icarus Fall, this module is robotically controlled and programmed to create a small habitation center within the next five years.  The superstructure will be built from imported materials, while secondary structures and support materials will be constructed from material extracted from the surface of Mercury itself.  One of the key components used in Icarus Fall is the earliest practical nanotechnology.

1997 AD

  • With a growing population of stations appearing in CisLunar space, as well as ever increasing traffic between the Earth-Moon system, Venus, and Mars, the CisLunar Transit Authority is given autonomous operational parameters.  Not beholden to any single nation, the organization is rechartered as the International Astronomical Commission, and will maintain order for all off-world traffic.  Based at SkyTower, the IAC will swiftly grow in influence and power, both politically and economically.
  • The Pan-Arabian War erupts as Saudi Arabia and her allies move to forcibly eject Iran and Iraq from the former nation of Kuwait.  The entire Middle East erupts into war while greater powers  including the United States, the Soviet Union, and China attempt to keep the conflict contained.  While the War and the events leading to it are certainly responsible to a large degree, the presence of Western forces in the region inspires the rise and proliferation of many terrorist groups, most of which are fundamentalist Islam in nature.
1998 AD:  Icarus Fall completes its self-construction and broadcasts that it is online.  The Icarus Unlimited Corporation explodes in popularity and profits as its robotics and nanotechnology divisions are vindicated.  The Corporation revisits its Mercury plans, and announces its intent to establish a manned outpost at Icarus Fall.  The spread of technologies showcased in this venture will eventually spread and become a boon for interplanetary expansion in the coming years. 

1999 AD

  • A terrorist plot to destroy SkyTower is carried out under the guidance of Ramzi Yousef, an Islamic extremist who had already orchestrated several western attacks, but had thus far managed to evade capture.  In this notorious incident, a bomb is planted on car 47 and was detonated just as it was leaving Marineris.  Believed to have been prematurely detonated, the damage was still extensive and resulted in the deaths of 33 people, with injuries to 211 others.  Had the bomb exploded near the midway point of the space elevator, the number of deaths could have been in the tens, even hundreds of thousands.  Yousef was captured soon after the detonation, but the vulnerabilities exposed in the attack served to severely rattle the UN and the International Astronomical Commission.
  • The International Astronomical Commission charters the Planetary Protection Force, a police force meant to guard against terrorist acts or other acts of violence against off world installations.  After the attack on SkyTower the move is applauded by the international community, while a minority decry the creation of a military force that is not beholden to any single nation.  Some space stations initially deny access to the PPF, but swiftly find themselves sanctioned by the IAC until they relent.  The PPF is soon said to be the defining voice of offworld international law, from Marineris to Mars.

2000 AD

  • The Grand Tour, conceived and designed by the Exploration Society and meant to be launched in the final year of the millennium, departs from SkyTower.  The vessel Explorer, manned by twenty scientists and engineers and three journalists, leaves on a mission to visit each of the worlds of the Solar System.  Funded by every space faring nation, it is billed as a voyage of discovery that is intended to unite an ever growing contentious world under the single banner of Human curiosity.  While the voyage through the Inner Solar System will be largely perfunctory, the much longer exploration of the Outer System will be a true Human first for the modern era.
  • The Icarus Unlimited Corporation  establishes a permanent population at Icarus Fall on Mercury.  The colony, while small, will establish itself as a leading center for the study and development of robotics, AI systems, and nanotechnology.

2001 AD

  • SkyTower's initial construction phase is completed.  The space elevator is open to lifting cargo loads of 20 tons, and immediately serves as a five day low energy and low cost gateway to space.  Work will continue on both it and SkyGate for many years to come, expanding the entire facility into the central hub for all off world travel.  Marineris itself has already expanded to become a major oceanic settlement, with a population now approaching 15,000.
  • September 5:  Middle Eastern terrorists attempt to detonate a small nuclear device in Moscow.  The bomb explodes, but because of fundamental flaws in its design, critical mass is not achieved and the explosion is later classified as a dirty bomb attack.  Nonetheless, the damage and loss of life is severe.  It is believed that this failed attempt is why the remaining two so-called September Attacks were not outright nuclear in nature.  The terrorists themselves later claim the attack was in retaliation for the Soviet involvement in the Pan Arabian War.
  • September 11:  In New York, a single hijacked passenger jet impacts the Twin Towers in the second of the three bloody September Attacks.  Contained within the jet were cases of radioactive material.  However, the effects of the radiological attack pale in comparison to the havoc wrought by the collapse of one of the Towers and surrounding building damage.  Indeed, the damage done to the surviving Tower is severe enough that it will eventually need to be demolished.
  • September 17:  The third of the September Attacks, as British terrorist sympathizers detonate large homemade bombs in various points of the London Underground.  With hundreds dead and billions of dollars in damage dealt, Great Britain reels from the attacks.
  • September 29:  An unlikely coalition of the United States, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain formally declare war on the Iran-Iraq alliance, and all affiliated terrorist groups.  Historically considered to be an extension and final phase of the Pan-Arabian War, the involvement of the West in direct military strikes changes the nature of the conflict entirely, and begins to move the War away from its long stalemate.
2002 AD:  The United States government begins to enact policies and programs designed to keep terrorists from entering the country, as well as to prevent any terrorism-like activities within her borders.  Many of these policies tend to impinge on personal liberties, although tolerances tend to be high in the wake of the September Attacks.  Still, concerns do appear at this time, and will grow over time.

2003 AD

  • North Polar ice is officially recorded at levels approaching 95% of normal for the year.  Previously and largely ignored in the rush of a growing quality of life around the world, climatic change begins to make itself known to the common public, the end result of two centuries of industrialization.  By the end of the year, climatic change will become a topic that is of equal importance to the Pan-Arabian War to the common man.
  • Amidst growing climatic concerns, a push towards the normalization of fusion energy is begun by nations around the around, with many initiatives pointed at phasing out the older nuclear technologies.  However, oil is still of paramount importance, making the on-going Pan-Arabian War a still very relevant event in the modern world.
2004 AD:  Following massive bombardments, missile strikes, and extensive retaliatory missions for even minor attacks against Western forces, operational hostilities in the Pan-Arabian War cease as Iran and Iraq, both severely broken as nations, unconditionally surrender.  Saudi Arabia takes on the role as regional peacekeepers, while at the same time inviting the Western powers to remove themselves.  The end result will be the dominance of Saudi Arabia over the entirety of the Middle East, with only Syria and Israel maintaining strong independence.  The rest of the region is sharply divided by money, power, and caste systems.  It is estimated that over 98% of the Middle East population live in abject poverty.  The borders of the region are heavily patrolled by European, Asian, and Indian forces.  The Middle East has, for all intents and purposes, become a single and impoverished nation-state, controlled by the iron fist of the Saudi's.
2006 AD:  While overt involvement in the Middle East has ended, various Western governments continue to exert a massive political influence abroad, with the goal of maintaining the flow of oil.  In the United States, growing anti-government sentiments begin to make themselves known.  The media is filled with various organizations dedicated to the reduction of Big Government, and individual rights become all important.  The US government, however, continues to enforce and expand policies that tend to restrict civil liberties, policies that came about because of Bloody September and the ongoing attempt to maintain secure borders.

2008 AD

  • The advent of a series of computer systems and networks which are extremely advanced, and capable of overseeing operations in everything from private homes to major corporations.  While there are various operating system names, they can all be traced back to the same revolutions in computer and artificial intelligence technologies.  Linked together by the Internet, all of these systems are rooted together in a single central hub of activity.  At almost the same time that this new networking system begins to expand, independent nodes are beginning to be marketed by various companies.  By the end of the decade, several hundred such AI nodes will be in operation, all operating independent of each other.
  • Robotic systems tailored to work in tandem with the new and spreading computer systems are first marketed.  In time, these will become common place.
2009 AD:  Marineris and SkyTower now boast a total population of nearly 200,000 people.  While still held under international authority, the International Astronomical Commission becomes the central governing body, answerable only to the United Nations.  This is historically seen as a first step in Marineris becoming a true independent nation.
2011 AD:  The Icarus Unlimited Corporation for the first time produces reliable nanotech systems, capable of building complex devices from basic materials according to predetermined specifications.  Powered by Solar radiation, the interior of an major crater is reconstructed into a field of solar panels, providing vast amounts of usable energy for the colony.  It is a revolution in both industry and power generation, which will have major repercussions throughout the Inner System.
2014 AD:  Jonas Capri of Mercury designs and oversees the initiation of a construction phase at SkyGate.  A Stanford torus is begun, meant to expand that facility and and its capabilities, as well as to support in comfort  a large population of people.  The habitation ring will eventually be named Caprion, in honor of its designer.
2016 AD:  With the election of a new US President, the policies surrounding national security will be revisited and expanded on during his term.  Over the course of the next four years civil liberties will be curtailed, all in the interest of maintaining a "secure homeland", even though there seems to be no specific threat now that the Middle East is largely neutralized as a threat.  While national leaders still insist the the USA remains The Land of the Free, a sizeable portion of her population - and the world in general - begin to see her as an every growing embodiment of the Big Brother concept.
2019 AD:  The world's climate has generally been seen as entering into a period of instability, due to the massive growth of industry across the world, even though fusion-powered facilities are becoming more and more common.  The planet simply cannot compete with the heat and particles output of an industrial base that is striving to maintain goods and services for nearly 8 billion people.  In the wake of this, some winters over the years have been colder, some have been warmer, but no season has followed standard climatic predictions that are considered within the "norm".  It is during this year that this is truly driven home, when summer temperatures in the northern hemisphere reach all time highs.  The Polar ice, long since vanished during the summers, does not make a comeback with the winter.
2022 AD:  In the United States a universal ban on firearms of any sort is enacted by Presidential decree.  While the decree is impossible to act upon in a comprehensive or timely matter, it is seen as a gateway policy for other major "reforms".  In response, tens of thousands of protesters take to the streets throughout the country, demanding the repeal of the act and the removal of the President.  Many such protests become quite violent.  In the end the President enacts extraordinary powers and orders the detention of all dissenters, and to indefinitely suspend their right of Habeas Corpus.  Over the course of the year major detention facilities are constructed throughout the US and its territories, with some Lunar facilities being specially constructed as well.  Soon any detractors of the government are eligible for detention, and before the year is out various criminals of other sorts will also be sent to these "Political Sanctuaries".

2024 AD

  • The first major space habitat of the modern era is completed.  An O'Neill cylinder by design, and constructed from asteroidal resources provided by AmTech and construction robotics and nanotechnology from Icarus, it will provide a home for ten million people.  Placed in an inferior Solar orbit to the Earth and named Arcadia, it will become the model for future habitats to come.
  • After many threats to suspend voting and maintain his presidency in the course of what his administration perceives as a national emergency, the US President has been soundly defeated in elections and is replaced by a far more forgiving administration.  Over the next four years many of the Political Sanctuaries will be shut down.  However, certain restrictive civil liberty policies have become "the norm", and the tone of American society itself has changed.  Crime is under more restrictive and harsh laws, and many old Sanctuaries still serve as detention centers for more vocal critics. The American Dream has long since been forgotten, but the Land of the Free concept itself is now swiftly fading into history as just another American myth. 
2033 AD:  A Martian space elevator is completed by AmTech.  Its counterweight station will become the center of AmTech operations.  With the completion of this construction the Martian colonies gain far greater access to material support from Earth, as well as more asteroidal resources.  Controversy arose early in its operational history, however, when the IAC established a major Planetary Protection Force contingent there.  AmTech, having predicted an economic boom contingent upon the absence of the PPF, and now being placed under the thumb of the IAC's regulatory influence, protests loudly but to no avail.
2037 AD:  The space habitat Aaru is completed as a joint venture between AmTech and Icarus.  It is essentially a hollowed out asteroid, somewhat structurally reinforced, and placed into an orbit between Earth and Mars.  The interior environment is completely open and mimics an Earthly, ideal environment, and is home to some 30 million people.  Like the growing number of O'Neill cylinders, these type of asteroid habitats will begin to populate the Inner System with ever increasing numbers.
2041 AD:  Flooding begins to occur in coastal regions around the world.  Large populations are forced inland and the spread of disease, even among the First World nations, begins to reach epidemic proportions.  On the heels of these floods comes large and often unpredicted storms.  It is believed that some climatic redline has been breached, the result of centuries of slow global warmth.  Yet with the ongoing spread of fusion power systems and the continued decrease of greenhouse gas emissions, many scientists believe that the Earth is entering into a period of instability that could precede a major, long term climatic shift.
2043 AD:  Icarus begins construction on the Mercurian Solar Field, a project designed to cover certain latitudes with Solar collectors.  When completed there will be four bands of collectors, two on either side of the equator, and two at the northern and southern mid-latitudes.  The power generation from these fields will make Mercury totally independent of off world energy needs, and will begin to provide power for the rest of the Inner Solar System via directed microwave transmission.  The plan is to provide a much needed source of energy for the Earth, and to eliminate the last vestiges of fossil fuel use.
2044 AD:  After years of difficulty a space elevator is finally completed at Venus.  It is a minor construction as far as over all load bearing capabilities.  Built entirely by the Soviet Colonial Authority, it nonetheless represents a major step forward in the developing self-sufficiency of the Venus colonies.
2047 AD:  A new generation of genetically modified Lunar inhabitants from the Chinese colonies, dubbed "Moon Men" by the popular press, take control of the primary Chinese settlement.  Citing their wish for independence, they expose nearly fifty years of genetic manipulation and repression by the Chinese government.  Ignoring world sympathy for the Moon Men, the Chinese government denounces the rebellion and attempts an armed retaking of the colonies.  The IAC deploys the PPF, but these forces are swiftly overrun and impounded by the Chinese military.  In a sudden spiral of interdependence, alliances, and treaties a full blown shooting war is begun on Lunar soil, as well as through CisLunar space.  The offworld Chinese aggression is abruptly stopped by the Soviets, who attack key surface targets.  The former Chinese Lunar colonies are now placed in the hands of the Moon Men, and China withdraws from all hostilities in space.  However, on the Earth, the Soviet-Chinese War erupts.

2048 AD: The Year Everything Changed

  • AmTech, firmly entrenched on Mars both socially and politically, declares a Martian independence from the Earth, citing the recent Moon Man rebellion, over bearing policies of both the IAC and heavy handedness of the PPF, and a general need for any society to evolve.  Also cited are the new and fervent ongoing hostilities between the Chinese and the Soviets, resulting in economic hardships on "...a corporation and people who who only want to earn the right to live peacefully."  Various political bodies all across the Angry Planet back this AmTech initiative.  The parent nations on Earth refuse to accept the declaration, but with assets occupied by those same hostilities, as well as battling climatic disaster, they do little but posture while the move to independence happens regardless.
  • The call for Martian independence, which continues to become a reality despite Earthbound opposition, has had a major effect throughout the Inner System.  On the Moon, the Lunar Colonial Coalition announces their impatience by restrictive Earth policies and national rivalries, and so declare their own independence.  On Venus open revolution occurs as well, and the Soviet command is swiftly overthrown and replaced by a People's Interim Republic of Venusian Territories.  But perhaps most remarkably are the breaking away of stations and habitats in both CisLunar Space and throughout the Inner System.  Within a matter of weeks space born resources begin to cease flowing to the Earth with the terrestrial nations suddenly caught in a net of scarcity.  Once affluent regions are finding it difficult to provide food to their citizens, and material wealth is being sold - or stolen - in order for individuals to maintain any kind of quality of life.  The Earth, racked as it is by war and a chaotic climate, is tossed into a sudden and deep economic and social depression.
  • Planetary protection Forces across the Inner System are being torn apart by divided loyalties.  Entire divisions are devoting their military strength and expertise to fledgling independent colonies, while in other areas they are abandoning their posts and returning to the Earth.  in many stations and habitats they are being used by the IAC to overthrow independence movements and regain control over the population.  Small brush fire wars are breaking out across the Inner System, and while the IAC is attempting to tighten its fist and maintain cohesive control, the Inner System is swiftly falling into chaos.
